Why is iron important during pregnancy?
Iron is very important during pregnancy for both you and your developing baby. Iron plays a key role in transporting oxygen all around the body and it is required to make extra blood (haemoglobin). It contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue and plays an important role in normal energy metabolism, cognitive function, and immune.
Pregnant women can benefit from taking an iron supplements if they are unable to fulfil their iron requirements through dietary intake alone.
Research data shows that pregnant women have an increased demand for iron due to an increase in blood volume.
Can I always get enough iron from my diet during pregnancy?
You can get iron from food but it may not be absorbed well and it may not be sufficient enough for your increased requirements during pregnancy. "Even if you enjoy well balanced meals, most people absorb only 10 per cent of iron in their diet," Dr Dawn Harper.
How can I choose the best iron supplement for pregnancy?
If you do need to supplement your iron intake in pregnancy, it’s important to choose one that is both kind on your system as well as strong on absorption.
